::Quick and friendly service and very nice of them to give me a ride back to my hotel after taking the car back to them when a big storm was rolling in, for no extra cost.

::Having looked into various car rental companies ahead of our trip to Reykjavik, we decided to spend the extra money and go with Hertz as they had a reputation for quality and reliability. Unfortunately, this assumption was put to the test, and Hertz failed badly. A couple of days into our trip we noticed a tiny chip had appeared on the windscreen. Although we did not know what caused this, we pointed it out to the Hertz representative when returning the car. We were told that we would have to cover the entire cost of the windshield, but that the majority of this (estimated to be 85-90%) would be refunded to us as it was almost certain that the chip would be fixed. The rep said they would be in touch in coming days to confirm this. Given Hertz's reputation, we accepted this so that we could check into our flight on time. After not hearing from the company for a week, we got in touch to find out the final charge for the car. At that point we were told that we would not get any refund and that the whole windscreen had been replaced at a cost of the equivalent of £400 to us. Our Hertz insurance did not cover this, since we did not tick the box to pay the special windscreen insurance, neither did our separate travel insurance. Hertz claimed not to have insurance of their own for which we could pay an excess to cover the damage. We ended up feeling completely let down by Hertz. We were surprised that windscreens were not covered in the insurance, although I admit we should have read up on this more carefully (I will always check and pay for this in future). But we were completely bemused that we were told that the chip wasn't a big deal when returning the car, only to later be told that it required the windscreen to be completely replaced at such an extravagant cost (note that we hired a mini vehicle, not a luxury car). I have attached pictures to this post to show the "damage" that demanded the entire windshield to be replaced. When we next return to Reykjavik we will use Budget, which was cheaper and had similar queues at the airport when we arrived. We will not rent from Hertz again.
